As Above, So Below
"As Above, So Below," is a 3000 square foot asphalt mural commissioned by Hudson Square Business Improvement District. It is located in Hudson Square in Manhattan, New York, in a pedestrian plaza outside of Freeman Plaza East on Varick Street (between Watts and Broome Streets- and between two entrances to the Holland Tunnel).
Rooted in the ancient Hermetic idea that the visible world is an expression of the invisible one, this mural connects the visible energy of Hudson Square with its hidden systems beneath. The patterns reference underground utilities, the long-buried Minetta Creek, and the network of streets and buildings. Through vibrant color and modular motifs, the piece transforms the ground plane into a playful landscape that mirrors the neighborhood’s creativity and the natural and engineered forces that continue to shape our city.
Presented by Hudson Square Business Improvement District as part of Hudson Square Canvas.
